Baskets
Theresa has always been a crafter from crocheting, sewing and later pottery. While a Snowbird in Florida she took a 3 hour workshop by a master pine needle basket maker and was hooked. Long leaf needles from the southern states are used. The bottoms of the baskets vary from costume jewelry, wood, shells, pottery and agates.
The Seminole Indians of SW Florida were the first pine needle basket makers about 9,000 years ago.The coiling method was first employed to make hats during the civil war.As decades passed pine needle crafting was recommended as a recreational handicraft for young women and woman groups.Today it’s not uncommon to see contemporary pine needle baskets in fine galleries alongside baskets made by the artists mother and grandmothers.
