"Trained as research physicist I embraced some art form as an escape from the
scientific discipline of my everyday routine. I found this escape in the art of
woodworking. Most specifically furniture building. I found it fulfilling to create
pieces for family members which were greatly appreciated, but my true calling
was realized when a niece requested a cradle for an impending new arrival. I
always made a colonial style cradle; however, she requested a swinging style
model which required 18 matched spindles.
To accomplish this I purchased a lathe, only to discover it took a lot of practice to
produce an acceptable spindle not to mention the task of making 18 matched
pieces. Needless to say, I purchased the spindles and completed the project in
time for the arrival of my grandniece.
While I found the turning process to be relaxing and enjoyable I realized that I
needed more training. Consequently, I signed up for workshops with several well-
known woodturners. In exploring the various pieces that could be made I found
the most appealing to be spindle turning as applied to pens and peppermills.
While I can make bowls and vases, I prefer to turn the smaller utilitarian projects.
Currently my work is primarily made from domestic and imported hardwoods that
I purchase my newest interest is in finding unusual materials that can be
incorporated into projects. These include shells, dried flowers, horn and antler as
well as graphics made by inlay of laser cut dyed woods. I also do custom pieces
that make use of photographs applied to the pen and cast in acrylic.
I always strive to produce unique items that are carefully created and finished
using materials that are sustainable."
