Fiber Arts

Kate was born in Newark and has called Blairstown home for the past 30 years. Drawn instinctively to color and texture, she has long been fascinated by the ways people choose to ornament themselves and express identity through material and form.
She began weaving more than four decades ago, first teaching herself tapestry weaving and later expanding her practice at Rutgers, where she studied multi-harness loom weaving under the tutelage of Emma Amos, known for incorporating textiles into her large-format paintings. Kate deepened her fiber journey while working for Fred and Linda Walker at Woods Edge Farm in Stockton, New Jersey, where, as a general farm hand, she learned to spin and work with natural dyes.
Each of her pieces is an original creation inspired by the world around her—nature, family, friends, and home. Her textiles are primarily composed of cotton, wool, silk, and linen, though the magpie in her is often charmed by the shimmer of rayon or a glint of metallic thread.
